A Story of Two Mountains: San Jacinto and San Gorgonio

Realization #1: There's no camping in Palm Springs and one must resort to sneaking into questionable trailer parks where tatooed and boozed up ax murderers reside.
Realization #2: My tent managed to invert itself into an impossible pretzel knot since the last time I used it.

Mile 0 of 15: San Jacinto. We sure look optimistic at 5:30 AM
Mile 2 of 15: San Jacinto. Still looking optimistic.

Mile 7 of 15: San Jacinto (Looking towards Joshua Tree). After I'd managed to be pricked by 2 cacti and our water was on the verge of running out. The desert is an unfriendly place at 5500 feet.

Realization #3: We had taken the most difficult and wrong trail and still were 8 miles and 5000 feet in elevation away from San Jacinto's summit.
Realization #4: We had only 2 liters of water left.

The elusive San Jacinto summit mocking us.

Mission #2: San Gorgonio-11,400 feet

Mile 2 of 22: Looking pretty optimistic

Mile 9 of 22: Beneath that smog lies an incredible view of Southern California, 10,800 below.

Mile 10.5 of 22: Nearing Summit Camp, San Gorgonio. 11, 350 feet.

Summit Camp San Gorgonio 1:30 pm: Highest Peak in Southern California

Mile 22+: Sporting the official Victory beanie and licking our wounds with our preferred choice of pain relief.

What are two girls to do...

on a hot summer day of swimming except to drink gatorade out of the only clean glasses left.

Our department's faculty welcomed us to the program with this prayer:

"May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half truths, and
superficial relationships so that you may live deep within your heart. May
God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of
people, so that you may wish for justice, freedom, and peace. May God bless
you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in
this world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done."

“When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers – the moon and the stars you have set in place – what are mortals that you should think of us? For you made us only a little lower than the angels, and you crowned us with glory and honor. You put us in charge of everything you made, giving us authority over all things ....” (Psalms 8:3-8 NLT)
